Youth/Amateur Scholarship Program

Thank you for your interest in the American Miniature Horse Association Youth/Amateur Scholarship Program. Committed to supporting the education of AMHA and its emerging leaders, AMHA offers scholarship opportunities to AMHA Youth/Amateur Members (up to age 20) who wish to continue their education through an accredited college or university (four-year college or university, junior college or trade/vocational school).

Because AMHA wishes to award the largest amount of support to the most deserving members, the AMHA Scholarship Selection Committee will award scholarships based on the member's academic record, American Miniature Horse involvement, level of need, career plans and references. Only one scholarship may be awarded per member during their AMHA career. Please follow the directions carefully when completing the application.

AMHA General Youth/Amateur Scholarships ______

Individual scholarships in the amounts of $1,000 and $500 are currently available to AMHA Youth/Amateur Members who have been Members for three or more years and who meet the below guidelines for application. This is a one-time scholarship.

AMHA Scholarship Guidelines for Application

A. Must be a youth/amateur member (up to age 20 per January 1 of the year applied) in good standing with AMHA (for at least three or more years). Length of membership will be a factor in the selection process. For information on how to become a member, contact AMHA or visit www.amha.com.

B. Previous AMHA scholarship recipients are not eligible to reapply.

C. Must provide current or most recent transcript showing at least a 2.5 GPA for senior year of high school or from college or university if member is already attending. The document must clearly show a cumulative grade point average on the 4.0 scale. If a different scale is used the GPA must be converted to a 4.0 scale by a school official and be clearly marked on the transcript or record. This document must have an official signature and/or school seal.

D. Must submit recent 3" x 5" color head and shoulder only photograph. Photos will not be returned.

E. Applications must be received by no later than July 15, of the year in which the member applies. Recipients will be notified by October 15 of the year applied.

F. All applicants must submit a 500-word essay on "How the American Miniature Horse has benefited
me."

G. Member must include a total of three reference letters. Letters must be written by adults who are at least 21 years of age and not the member's legal guardian or a relative. Letters from AMHA directors or standing committee members are preferred. Each reference must state how he or she knows the member and for how long. These letters must be from the same three adults listed as references on the application form. They should have specific, first-hand knowledge of member's activities and must be able to validate them. Each letter must be typewritten and included with the application.

H. Evidence of residency is determined by state in which taxes are files unless voters certificate is provided.

I. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student, 24 semester hours per year for undergraduate students or 12 semester hours per year for graduate students during the semester for which the scholarship is funded.

Funding/Evaluation of Scholarships ____________

J Funding will be issued to the college/recipient. All checks will be written to the college name/individual name. Under no circumstances will the checks be made out solely to the recipient.

K Funds can be used towards tuition, books, board or any other miscellaneous school need.

L If recipients choose to postpone their education, their scholarship may be forfeited.

M The AMHA Scholarship Selection Committee will be formed from an independent panel of educators and horse persons (three or more) who are not affiliated with AMHA.

N Scholarship applications will be evaluated based on the following:

25 pts. Academic record & ability and aptitude for serious study career advancement
30 pts. Achievement/involvement with American Miniature Horses
10 pts. Community service through individual initiative and efforts
10 pts. Leadership in the home, community, church, and school
25 pts. Documentable financial need

O AMHA can at any time change the number of scholarship recipients and the amount awarded. AMHA reserves the right to reevaluate funding at any time.
